Finding a Board Seat: A Two-Way Street

A board role has to be the right fit for both the company and the candidate. Beyond qualifications, alignment in all aspects is crucial for long-term success. This has to be a good fit for the company and also a good fit for the candidate—do culture, industry, and goals align?

Organizations seek board members who bring specific expertise to help navigate challenges.

Preparing for a Board Role

Building board readiness takes time and intentionality. Here are some ways to gain experience and sharpen your skills:

  • Serve on nonprofit boards – Gain governance experience and expand your network.

  • Pursue governance education – Resources like NACD, the Public Directors Association (PDA), and university courses can help.

  • Refine your networking approach – Pay attention to how board members assess and engage with you.

  • Understand board dynamics – Learning governance language ensures you can navigate board interviews confidently.

An example of this is shown by our Managing Director, Claudia. At just 25, she’s already serving on the boards of two nonprofits - an incredible feat on its own. But what’s even more impressive is how she approaches every board meeting as a learning opportunity. Sitting alongside seasoned directors, she’s constantly observing, taking mental notes on the types of questions they ask, and how they navigate complex discussions. It’s not just about having a seat at the table - it’s about truly listening, understanding, and preparing herself for future opportunities.

Board opportunities can arise unexpectedly. The best approach? Be proactive.
